About Frank Reed

COMMODORE F REED OBE OStJ BA MSc ROYAL NAVY

Commodore Frank Reed was born in Edington Wiltshire in 1951 and educated at Trowbridge Boys High School. He joined the Royal Navy in October 1967 as a Junior Probationary Medical Technician. Following initial Medical Assistant training he went to sea in HMS Diana, returning to RNH Haslar in 1969 to undertake Physiotherapy training. After qualifying as a Chartered Physiotherapist he served in RNH Plymouth and HMS Ajax being advanced to Petty Officer in 1975 and promoted to Chief Petty Officer in 1977. Following the BRNC Dartmouth and Royal Naval College Greenwich SD Officers Courses he was commissioned as a Medical Services Officer in May 1977.

After commissioning Commodore Reed served in HMS Cochrane as the Medical Administrative Officer until 1980 when he returned to Haslar as the Rehabilitation Officer. During his time in Haslar he gained an Open University BA in Psychology and an MSc in Rehabilitation Medicine from Southampton University. He was appointed Serving Brother of the Order of St John for his rehabilitation work in 1985. Following the Lieutenants Greenwich Course in 1985 he worked on the staff of Commodore Amphibious Warfare, returning to Greenwich in 1988 he completed the RN Staff Course.

Following staff appointments in the Defence Medical Services Directorate MOD and as Secretary to Surgeon Rear Admiral (Operational Medical Services) he was promoted to Commander in October 1993. Appointments as a Commander have included branch manager in the Directorate of Naval Manning and as the operational desk officer in the Surgeon General-s Department MOD. He was re-appointed to the Surgeon General-s staff as Assistant Director Medical Programmes in April 1998 with responsibility for the policy and procurement of operational medical equipment and the Defence Medical Services Information Strategy. He was the first Medical Services Officer to be promoted to the rank of Captain and was appointed Deputy Commander Defence Medical Services Training Centre in November 1999. In December 2001 he took over as Commandant DMSTC and was also briefly the Chief Executive of the Defence Medical training Agency. Following promotion to Commodore in June 2002 he was reappointed as Commandant DMSTC. Commodore Reed has held the additional responsibility as Head of the RN Medical Services Branch since 1996. He was awarded an OBE in the Queens Birthday Honours List 2002. From December 2003 he was employed in the MoD leading Manpower Strategy and Medical Training Projects, following this he was Medical Officer in Charge of the Institute of Naval Naval Medicine. His final post in the RN was Deputy Medical Director General (Naval) . He retired from the Navy in February 2007 and is enjoying spending more time at home.

Frank Reed lives in the highest house in Cornwall on north of Liskeard with his wife Elizabeth, they have three grown up sons. His interests are woodturning, learning to play golf and he is a trained and qualified management coach and mentor.
